'Celebration of Strings' Tour
Clwyd Theatr Cymru @ 19:30 PM
Sinfonia Cymru welcomes to the stage David Adams, Leader of the orchestra of Welsh National Opera, who will direct the orchestra’s outstanding string musicians in this joyful celebration of music for strings at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold.
The orchestra will honour some of the most admired and popular music ever written for string instruments with a lively programme featuring music by Tchaikowsky, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Mathias.
Tchaikowsky, one of the most popular classical composers of the 19th century intentionally imitated Mozart’s style in composing his serenade and said ‘I love this Serenade terribly, and fervently hope that it might soon see the light of day". The piece was first performed in the Moscow Conservatory in 1880 by professors and students, as a surprise for the composer.
Also featuring in this celebration of impressive string music is Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major, a particularly popular and light-hearted work from his ‘Salzburg’ Symphonies, followed by Mendelssohn’s dreamy Symphony for Strings No. 6 in Eb Major. The orchestra also give homage to Welsh born composer William Mathias, playing one of his earliest notable works, the Divertimento for Strings, first performed in 1958 at the Royal Academy of Music.
Programme:
Mozart Divertimento in D Major
Mendelssohn Symphony for Strings No. 6 in Eb Major
Mathias Divertimento for Strings
Tchaikowsky Serenade for Strings
Directed by David Adams, Leader of the WNO orchestra
