'Masters of Music' Tour
Dora Stoutzker Hall @ 19:30 PM
Sinfonia Cymru’s ‘Masters of Music’ tour celebrates three world famous masters of musical composition, Mozart, Haydn and Shostakovich.
Mozart is one of the most popular composers of all time and many of his works are considered to be artistic masterpieces. Symphony No. 29 in A major, an intimate yet fiery piece, is celebrated as one of the finest symphonies ever composed.
Haydn, ‘father’ of the symphony, is renowned for refining various genres of classical music composition in the 18th Century. Haydn’s Paris Symphonies Nos. 82-87 were first performed in 1787 and became an immediate international success. Sinfonia Cymru perform No.87 in A major.
Shostakovich brought string quartet composition to the forefront of classical music making during a ‘modern era’ revival in the 20th Century. Often working under extreme censorship in Soviet Russia; the composer’s musical genius still gained him a global reputation. The orchestra performs Shostakovich Chamber Symphony [String Quartet No.8 arr Barshai], giving audiences the chance to listen to Rudolf Barshai’s hugely popular arrangement of Shostakovich’s original Eighth String Quartet.
The original quartet composition will also be performed in a pre-concert First Wednesday at The Riverfront, 7th March 2012.
Sinfonia Cymru welcomes to the stage the exceptional young Welsh cellist Steffan Morris and international cellist and conductor Paul Watkins. Morris performs Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major and Watkins takes up the baton to conduct Sinfonia Cymru for the first time.
