Established in 1996, Sinfonia Cymru is a rare champion in Wales of young musical talent and now works in partnership with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. By combining the most outstanding music students with young professional musicians, Sinfonia Cymru supports young musicians at the outset of their professional careers. With a full range of opportunities, from orchestral and ensemble performance to education and outreach activity, Sinfonia Cymru equips its players with skills and experience essential to the modern day professional musician.
Sinfonia Cymru performs and develops audiences for classical music of the highest quality throughout Wales, and is committed to performing in areas of the country which have limited cultural provision. In recent years, the orchestra has performed in Cardigan, Llandysul, Pontyberem, Newport, Criccieth, St. Asaph and Llandrindod Wells as well as Cardiff and Wrexham.
Educational Workshops
Each season, the orchestra actively develops a full programme of education workshops, children’s concerts and community events to complement Sinfonia Cymru’s main programme of work thereby building relationships with whole communities and creating a legacy for the orchestra extending beyond each performance. Recent projects include a free community events series which involved local school pupils from Llandrindod Wells, Criccieth and Wrexham performing in choirs and as musicians alongside the orchestra.
A Reputation for Excellence
Sinfonia Cymru’s fine reputation for excellence is demonstrated by regular invitations from major UK festivals including the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, North Wales International Music Festival, Faenol Festival and Henley Festival as well as through appearances with many distinguished artists including Llyr Williams, Bryn Terfel, Catrin Finch, Karl Jenkins and Rebecca Evans. The orchestra has also forged strong relationships with outstanding younger artists including Alina Ibragimova, Chloë Hanslip and David Childs. The orchestra also regularly appears on S4C.
